What is TMJ disorder?

TMJ disorder can lead to clenching of the jaw and grinding of the teeth. This can cause facial pain, headaches, clicking when chewing, as well as pain in the neck, shoulder or back. The problem of an imperfect or uneven bite is extremely common, but doesn’t always produce severe symptoms. However, some people are prone to symptoms, which can dramatically affect their quality of life. If you have been suffering in this way, the team at Clifton Moor Dental Centre can help you to get to the source of the problem and eliminate it.

How can jaw problems be treated?

Treatment for badly aligned jaws and teeth grinding can include:

Wearing a custom-made appliance to relax your jaw muscles and help prevent tooth wear

Orthodontic treatment

Maxillofacial surgery

Rectifying badly fitting bridgework

I have been with this practice for many years, had really bad toothache this week, was fitted in very quickly. All the staff were very kind and efficient but special thanks to my dentist Andrew for his patience sorting out my stubborn tooth, great to be pain free, thank you so much.

Common symptoms of an uneven bite

If you have discomfort that you suspect may be caused by a jaw problem or difficult bite, don’t suffer in silence. Book an appointment at our Clifton Moor practice where our experienced dental team can assess your bite, discuss your problems and talk about possible treatments.

TMJ problems

A clicking or grinding in your jaw joints, often accompanied by pain and a ringing in your ear. You may also find it difficult to open your mouth wide.

Muscle spasm

If your jaw is poorly positioned, the muscles that move it have to work a lot harder and can get tired. This leads to muscle spasm. The main symptoms include continual headaches, pain in the neck and shoulders or pain behind the eyes.

Teeth and gums

Your teeth can become heavily worn, chipped or flattened due to excessive tooth grinding. Over time, this can lead to loose teeth and receding gums.
